The trophy itself, pictured to the left, is an original work commissioned by the renouned Hans Gobo Fräbel studios. The giant "greater than" mathematical symbol reads, "Math Achievement: We're greater than!" and holds the name of each year's winner.

Our math students in 8th grade are invited to come to school early to take a very difficult math test. The top three winning students then compete in front of their entire 8th grade class solving math problems based on time and accuracy. The winning student receives a Pythagorean Award Plaque and this highest math honor at Mabry.

Three years ago Cobb County School District began an annual recognition program for the Professional of the Year in which each school staff elected a staff member in a non-certified position for special recognition. We wanted to do something special for these three employees, elected over the last three years, to honor their service to our school. Therefore, we created this podcast to highlight their contributions to Mabry Middle School.

The 2007 Annual Mabry Film Festival, our 6th such event, was nothing short of a stunning success. In fact, this film festival was the best one yet. The festival was launched by Dr. Tim Tyson, Mabry's principal, six years ago as a means of propelling technology integration into engaging instructional activities for students. Mrs. Janet McCrary, retired Instructional Lead Teacher, and Mr. Chris Swanson, former Instructional Lead Teacher's hard work and dedication to this event has propelled it into an international model for excellence in technology integration.

This year's sold out, black tie event is like the Oscars for education. Student film maker teams arrived, in spectacular attire, to walk the red carpet to their pre-party celebratory events. Spot lights pierced the sky as, at 7:30PM, the enormous audience rose in complete silence to honor the men and women who defend our nation. Then, the celebrations began! The event was hosted from start to finish by our student emcees who introduced the nominees for each movie category and opened the eagerly anticipated envelopes. Each film, a two-minute short, was based on this year's festival theme: "Making Our World a Better Place."

Nothing is more exciting to our students than seeing such a large audience eagerly view their work with critical acclaim, than seeing and hearing the parents' and students' tremendous enthusiasm for each movie team's hard work in bringing big ideas to life on the big screen. And cheer they did! This year, in addition to the winning movie in each category, because of the generosity of the International Society for Technology in Education, commonly referred to as ISTE, an Apple iBook laptop computer and a Digital Video Camera was donated to a deserving student. Because of the generosity of Apple Incorporated, three students were awarded an 80 gigabyte video iPod. While not every student could take home the gold, all of the students who participated in this one-of-a-kind event are winners! Every single movie was a shining testimony to the bright hope of tomorrow: the sincere desire of our children to make the world a better place!

You may watch all of the movies from the film festival online through your browser by simply clicking on any image below. Each image links to the movies in that category. Or you can visit mTV (Mabry TV) to see not only these movies, but many digital media products from previous years.

My heart-felt thanks to the many, many people who helped make this event the most extraordinary educational celebration children can experience!

To view the different movies nominated in each category, click on the category links below. QuickTime 7 must be installed properly on your computer (Windows or Mac). The Mabry Middle School Band was invited to audition for The Midwest Clinic, an international band and orchestra conference which is certainly one of the most prestigious school music honors in the United States. Performance at the conference is by invitation only. Our band students and teachers work very hard and are among the very best middle school bands in the country.

Being requested to audition and then accepted to perform at Midwest next December is an extraordinary and rare honor for a middle school band. I am just astounded! Congratulations to these students and teachers!

Below we are including two audio podcasts from their recent recording session. These are among the recordings included in their audition package. To listen to each podcast in your browser, simply click on each link.

Dr. Larson, world- renowned kidney transplant surgeon, and Dr. Csete, world-renowned liver transplant surgeon, held an interview for several hours with our students, providing them with current research information for their movie project. These doctors as well as others at Emory University graciously shared their time and significant expertise with our Mabry students.

And while our students do not earn a grade for their movie projects, they were excited about learning in a real world context, the medical facilities at Emory University. Even our parent chaperones were mesmerized by these two surgeons as they shared a wealth of learning. We want to express our sincere appreciation to the medical professionals at Emory that made this rich learning activity possible for us!

The Sixth Annual Mabry Film Festival, April 24, 2007, 7:30pm, promises to be the best festival yet. This year's theme is "From Learning in Our Classroom to Making a Global Contribution." Approximately twenty-five student-made, two-minute movies will be presented to our black-tie audience entering on the red carpet.

Awards will be given for Best Picture, Best Documentary, Best Teaching and Learning, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Independent Film (6th, 7th, and 8th grade awards in this last category). Pending availability, additional special awards will be given to deserving students. These awards may include: an Apple iBook computer, and a digital video camera.

Tickets for the festival are $3.00 and in limited supply. No tickets will be sold at the door as we expect this to be a sold out event. The festival begins at 7:30. Pre-parties begin at 6:30. We anticipate that the doors to the festival will open at 7:15 for general seating. This year, we are attempting to limit the festival to 90 minutes.

We want to make subscribing to each teacher's blog as easy as possible. Therefore, we have added a new feature to MabryOnline.org. On the list of all of our teacher's blogs located at this link, you will notice this new graphic appears by each blog title:

If you have already set up a free account at Bloglines, clicking on the graphic next to each blog's title will take you to your Bloglines account and begin the simple subscription process! At that point you are just a few clicks of a mouse away from subscribing to that blog.

So go to this list of MabryOnline blogs, and click on the graphic next to each blog to which you wish to subscribe! It can't get any easier than this.

Presenting to the Cobb Leadership Class of 2007 was a tremendous honor for our students.

Yesterday Mabry had two guests from Tranby College in Western Australia, Les and Nicole. Les, an 8th grade teacher and soon to be the ITC director of the middle school (grades 7 - 9), and Nicole, a Kindergarten teacher, both very technologically literate, first became aware of Mabry through MabryOnline.org, where they stated they watched, in utter amazement, the movies our students have made. They attained a grant to come visit Mabry firsthand to learn more about our school and the ways we leverage global connectivity to maximize student achievement.

Both stated that their visit was very informative. They asked many questions, and visited many classes. They also talked with a number of our students (who served as international Mabry ambassadors), which they said was one of the most valuable aspects of their visit. We will post a podcast of their meeting with our students. They spoke of the friendliness of our staff and the politeness of our students.

Additionally they brought two specially framed photographs Les took in Western Australia. He made a podcast which will be posted along with pictures of the pictures to MabryOnline, discussing the significance of their gracious and unexpected gift. I am delighted that Mabry is providing a standard of professional excellence and best practices that is being recognized not only in the United States, but, through MabryOnline, even around the world.
