What do the words of the First Amendment mean?
Freedom of Religion, Speech, Press, Assembly, and Petition. We discussed these 5 freedoms and how they influence our everyday lives. Using a hypothetical situation, we brainstormed various techniques they might use to get their message out. We learned that we have many, many ways of making our view points known. Just as we tried to convey, it's a good idea to respect the rights of other people to hold their own viewpoints. We should listen to what other people have to say in all our activites and throughout our everyday lives. Very often we do not agree with other people's ideas: sometimes we find that what they have to say distasteful or disagreeable or just plain wrong. But people are entitled to hold these ideas. We do not have the right to control or suppress ideas and beliefs we find offensive.
Your assignment for tonight is to think of a way to help remember these rights. Write a poem, a rap song or advertising jingle that will tell someone else all about the rights we have under the First Amendment. If you check the blog tonight, and need extra time to finish your assignment :) you may have one extra day. If you were absent today then create a slogan for a bumper sticker that expresses something about the First Amendment.
REMINDER!!!!! Map Quiz: WEDNESDAY: Mountains and major bodies of water
Don't Forget.
Progress Reports went home Friday and most were signed and returned today. Parents ask to see their report if you have not seen it yet.
