Fun for this Weekend:Japanfest - 20th Anniversary

Don't Miss The JAPANFEST this weekend!

JapanFest
September 23-24, 2006
Where: Stone Mountain Park

Atlanta, GA -
JapanFest is held in the wide-open spaces of Stone Mountain Park. The festival is organized by The Japan-America Society of Georgia (JASG) and The Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Georgia (JCCG), and supported by the Consulate General of Japan. The "JapanFest Weekend" is the highlight of a month-long series of events designed to promote understanding between Japanese and Americans in the Southeast.
The festival celebrates the anniversary of the U.S.-Japan relationship. In 1853, Commodore Perry's visit to Japan opened relations between the two nations with the signing of the Treaty of Amity in 1854. Stephen Sondheim used Commodore Perry's visit as the basis for his musical, Pacific Overtures. This same theme will be running throughout the festival, with several activities planned.
Among the featured attractions at JapanFest Weekend are taiko drummers; Japanese street performer and "fantasy dreammaker" candy artist Masaji Terasawa, who creates taffy-like edible flowers and animals; traditional Japanese and Okinawan dances and koto music; several different forms of martial arts demonstrations including aikido, judo, karate, kendo, kyudo, shinkendo and sumo; koi (carp) competitions and bonsai displays and workshops. Additionally, there will be opportunities to witness a tea ceremony, observe a calligraphy demonstration, play the game of igo and learn flower arranging.

Visitors can purchase Japanese knick-knacks at the Ginza-dori, named after Tokyo's famous shopping district. Items include Japanese ceramics, traditional Japanese clothing and accessories and fun items such as masks and toys. Festival attendees can also sample a wide selection of Japanese cuisine. Children can also attend kite-making workshops, learn origami and join in fun games.

Several of the more than 320 Japanese businesses located in Georgia will display their products at the Made in Georgia exposition. Along with a display of their products, company representatives will be on hand to answer questions.

Selected as a Top 20 Event in the region by the Southeast Tourism Society in previous years, JapanFest Weekend attracted approximately 20,000 visitors in 2003. JapanFest provides the opportunity to experience many facets of the Japanese culture without traveling further east than Georgia's Stone Mountain Park. The event is open to the public. Festival attendees are encouraged to wear Japanese attire. $5.00 admission fee

Constitution Day:The First Amendment

What do the words of the First Amendment mean?
constitutiondayprev.jpgFreedom of Religion, Speech, Press, Assembly, and Petition. We discussed these 5 freedoms and how they influence our everyday lives. Using a hypothetical situation, we brainstormed various techniques they might use to get their message out. We learned that we have many, many ways of making our view points known. Just as we tried to convey, it's a good idea to respect the rights of other people to hold their own viewpoints. We should listen to what other people have to say in all our activites and throughout our everyday lives. Very often we do not agree with other people's ideas: sometimes we find that what they have to say distasteful or disagreeable or just plain wrong. But people are entitled to hold these ideas. We do not have the right to control or suppress ideas and beliefs we find offensive.
Your assignment for tonight is to think of a way to help remember these rights. Write a poem, a rap song or advertising jingle that will tell someone else all about the rights we have under the First Amendment. If you check the blog tonight, and need extra time to finish your assignment :) you may have one extra day. If you were absent today then create a slogan for a bumper sticker that expresses something about the First Amendment.
REMINDER!!!!! Map Quiz: WEDNESDAY: Mountains and major bodies of water
Don't Forget.
Progress Reports went home Friday and most were signed and returned today. Parents ask to see their report if you have not seen it yet.

Thursday Sept.7

We have been studying the physical features of Asia and the how they affect the land and its people. The students have in their possession a map of the region and will have a quiz over the rivers and deserts on Monday. We will tackle the mountains at a later date. Today the students will answer our last 2 questions about mountains and rivers and begin Climate and Resources p.498-501,

To better facilitate their note taking skills, I am requiring that they follow these steps:
1. Read the selection first
2. Develop an effective question from the subheading ( Ask: what was the main idea of the information ?)
3. Write that question in the left column
4. Answer the question in the right column, identifying the main idea(s), supporting details, and vocabulary ( do not use complete sentences, paraphrase)
5. At the end of their notes they will be required to draw conclusions and summarize an answer for their essential question in paragraph form.

Tuesday 9/12 we will be observing Constitution Day with a special look at the first amendment.

Chapter 24 test will be next Wednesday 9/14.

Did you know that a fifth ocean was named in the year 2000? What is it?

Physical Geography of Southern and Eastern Asia

They should be able to identify the main landforms of Asia.
Explain how mountain ranges affect life in this region.
Identify important rivers of this region and describe how they affect the land.
