We have practiced analyzing several persuasive essays and editorials this week. The analysis of these pieces have included recognizing types of support, tone words, words with negative and positive connotations, and audience. We will have a quiz Friday, Sept. 1, on the persuasive writing notes. Each student has a study guide for assistance on studying. I have been very pleased with my students' efforts. We will continue persuasive writing next week with writing our own persuasive pieces.

We have had the most awesome speeches ever! We have learned a great deal about each other and the gifts that we have to offer. We also completed our first literature piece, The Ransom of Red Chief, and reviewed the literary device of irony. Next week, we will begin our persuasive writing unit, so be prepared to write!! Have a great weekend!!

Our classes are off to a great start. All of my students have returned their syllabi and will be getting a treat this Friday! We are completing "If I Were in Charge of the World" in class and our baseline essay on Thursday. Each day we will have a daily D.O.L.and grammar warm up. Please make sure that your student has a binder with 4 dividers by Friday. This binder is an important organizational tool for language arts. Our test on The Pearl will be on Friday. Have a great rest of the week!!

Welcome to 8th grade language arts!! If you think that your language arts experiences in the past have been painful and boring, think again! This year our class will be participating in speech presentations, researching interesting topics, delving into the secret and dark mind of Edgar Allan Poe, expository and persuasive writing, grammar fun, and much, much more!!! I am looking forward to having you in my class on Monday. The most important advice I can give my students is to be organized, engaged in the learning process, and achieve to be an independent learner. Let's have a great year!!
