For those of you who don’t know, Tim Tyson came to education as a music teacher. Click the link below to see some comments he made in an email exchange between he and I about the future of music education.
“Technology is not the answer, it is a tool. It can serve as a tool to create beauty with unprecedented ease and facility.
Human beings have a brain and a heart, each nurturing the other. Without one, the other runs amuck and our reasons for thriving become tainted and eventually non-sustainable.
Schools must grow both the mind's capacity to excel at creating beauty (math, science, the arts) and the heart's capacity to recognize and appreciate beauty. One without the other will never work.
The performing arts and PE are THE most interactive educational experiences in schools! They are the most standards-based activity in the school, and the standard is not the minimum standard of NCLB. The standard is the beauty of perfection.
The ultimate act of education is, in my humble opinion, creation to make the world a better place. The performing arts are the essence of this! Technology affords the capacity for the pervasive sharing of that beauty.”
