Use the five themes of geography to explain the cultural and physical geography of Japan. Read below:
LOCATION: How would you describe the RELATIVE LOCATION of Japan? It's an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of China.
PLACE: Japan's climate could be best described as temperate, or having four seasons. Japan is a mountainous country with little farmland. A very famous landmark is Mt.Fuji. Human characteristics of the place that is Japan include a homogenous population.
HUMAN-ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTION: Japan depends on its natural resources of fish and rice, but has to build terraces and rice paddies because of limited land. Other ways Japan adapts to and modifies the environment includes building the Kansai airport in the water, and constructing homes and buildings to withstand earthquakes.
MOVEMENT: Since Japan is traditional and modern, transporation ranges from people moving swiftly through Japan on a bullet train, or slowly in a wooden rickshaw. Japan is a highly technological society, so ideas move rapidly through computers, cell phones and international business connections. As a major economic power, Japan exports and imports goods with trading partners.
REGION: Japan is located in the region of East Asia.
NAME the four islands of Japan. Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku.
Name four major cities besides Tokyo: Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya, Kobe, Kyoto, Sapporo.
Japan's highest mountain ranges are the Japanese Alps.
Two types of winds/storms that affect Japan are monsoons and typhoons.
