We began discussion on the civil rights movement, and I have asked students to ask parents, grandparents, etc. about their experiences growing up in the 60's and 70's. We will be reading Alice Walker's "Choice" beginning tomorrow, and from there will follow up with MLK and "I Have a Dream".

To start, students will have to answer 2 essential questions and work with vocabulary from the story. Other small projects and short writing assignments will follow. Below are the questions and words we will begin working on tomorrow.

Essential questions:
1. What was Alice Walker's purpose for writing "Choice"?
2. How is her "choice" connected to MLK's civil rights movement?

Vocabulary:

embrace disinherit
dispossession literally
brutality ephemeral
abandonment
colossal
