<![CDATA[<p>There will be a test next Tuesday on metrics and customary units. Students are working on ratios and using them to convert units of customary measure.  They need to remember the mnemonic "King Henry Dies By Drinking CHocolate Milk." This reminds them of the order of metric units. They need to know that you begin with the units that you are given and move your decimal point the number of units given in the same direction.  The B stand for the basic units which are grams, liters and meters.  This means that if you are given 7.9mg and want to change it to grams...grams are 3 units to the left so we will move the decimal 3 units to the left and get.0079                                                        <br />
Students also made a chart of customary units. They need to remember that there are 8 oz. in a cup...2 cups in a pint, 2 pints in a quart and 4 quarts in a gallon.  Using their knowledge of unit rates, the should be able to convert measures such as 6 pt. = ____ c. by creating a ratio that shows 1 pt. has 2 cups ; therefore we multiply 2 x 2 to find the number of cups in 6 pints.  Remember - when you are moving from a smaller unit to a larger one you divide. When moving from a larger unit to a smaller one, you multiply!    Homework tonight is practicing these skills in their workbooks unit 7-7 Practice (evens).</p>]]>

I told them in class today that learning will continue through the end of school and I expect good attendance and behaviors from them. We finished our solids unit and I know some of it was difficult for them, but they are shining so far as they learn about ratios and proportions. They are practicing practical applications of proportions and doing very well. We continue this week (except Thursday - field day). by covering the metric system and doing conversions. After this we will touch on customary unit such as cups, pints, quarts, gallons etc.  Next weewk we will look at scale drawings. There will still be HW's a quiz and one more test. We will stay focused and I'm sure they will all do well.</p>]]>

<![CDATA[<p>We're about to complete our circles unit. We celebrated 'Pi' day and measured our bubbles all to learn how to find the area and circumference of a circle. We will be analyzing circle graphs and learning how to determine the number of degrees each percentage of a circle requires. Our unit test will be on Tues. Mar. 27th.                                    The last few days before Spring Break we will be rolling dice and tossing coins to understand how probability works.  Students will be given a homework packet to complete over Spring break.  Very shortly after we return the students will be taking the CRCT exams and this will be a way to help them review and keep the information fresh.<br />

<![CDATA[<p>I hope everyone is ready for a nice long weekend!  We began learning how to solve on-step equations this week. The problems were simple (only addition and subtraction) but the process may be tedious. Although you think you can solve these equations in your head, it is important to follow all the steps correctly, for when they become longer and more difficult you will be able to stay organized and solve those too. *Remember..right now it's not so much the answer but the process that is important!  Next week we should begin equations with multiplication and division. Following that we will be using decimals and fractions all over again. This should be a good review.  Th basic process for solving one-step equations is as follows:  (Remember "Undo" the operation means to do the opposite of what is being done to the variable)<br />
Remember to show ALL WORK!<br />
Homework for the weekend: (We don't want you to forget what we just learned) is Worksheet #2 "Solving 1-step equations (ADDITION/SUBTRACTION)#'s 1-10 ON NOTEBOOK PAPER   *SHOW ALL WORK!</p>]]>

<![CDATA[<p>Students have been working very hard this week. We will be taking a test on Thursday covering all we've learned this 9 weeks. Students have a study packet that we will go over tomorrow and Thursday as well as classroom practice. The test will encompass changing fractions to percents to decimals and back. It will also cover finding a percent of a number and estimating a percent of a number as well as order of operations and exponents. This is a great deal of information but we have drilled it well. Quiz grades have been good and the students are prepared. Next week we will begin learning how to solve 1 step equations.</p>]]>

There will be a quiz on Thursday on changing fractions (that don't have a denominator as a factor of 100) into percents. Fridays we will continue to reinforce the weeks concepts and work on our accelerated math. Monday, the 29th we will find a % of a number and have a sort quiz. A unit test will be on Thursday, Feb 1.  Then we will begin learning 'order of operations' and exponents.</p>]]>
