Class Notes For Second Period

January 31, 2006 Essential Question: What are protists?
What are the characteristics of Plant like Protist?

Today we discussed the different types of algaes. They are euglenoids, dino flagellates, diatoms, green, red, and brown algae. Euglenoids can be autotrouphs when there is a light source, and heterotrophs when there isn't. Dino flagellates have plates, and can glow in the dark. Diatoms have glass like cell walls. Green algae can be Unicellular, multicellular or can live in colonies. Also known as sea lettuce, it is eaten in Salads. Brown algae are used as nutrients and as thickeners in food. An example of Brown algae is kelp. Last red algae can absorb light, and a substance called Carrageenan extracted from it can be found in icecream.

Then we worked in groups to create a concept map on Protists without using our textbook or notes. We will finish the map tomorrow in class.

The warm up today was #6. The questions were, What might cause red tide? When are red tides dangerous to humans?

The answer to the first question is when there is increase innutrients, and the second answer is some might produce toxins which get accumulated into fish, and then we eat them.
