Today in class, students took a DNA plasmid extracted from a jellyfish and inserted it into the DNA of bacteria. The name of the jellyfish is Aequorea victoria . The bioluminescent jellyfish glows in the dark because of the Green Florescent Protein. The bacteria will produce a protein that will fluoresce under UV light. Students got a glimpse of how geneticist work to create new traits in species.
