Announcements for May 2, 2007

The Mabry Spring Book Fair will be May 7-11 in the Media Center. Many summer reading titles will be available for purchase. Summer reading lists will be handed out in Language Arts classes on Friday, May 4.

YOU can help save a life! As one of the I-Movies explained, mosquito nets help prevent malaria. Go to NothingButNets.net, purchase a mosquito net for $10, and help save a life.

3 Vera Bradley purses are being raffled to send money to KIVA.org to help impoverished people in underdeveloped countries. Raffle tickets may be purchased for $1 each outside the cafeteria during lunch.

ALL Media center books out to students are due Friday, May 4.

The Mabry Volunteer Luncheon is Monday, May 7, from 10-11:30 A.M. in the Media Center.

As one of our recent I-Movies stated, 3 Vera Bradley purses will be raffled off during lunch outside the cafeteria. The cost per ticket is $1.00. All proceeds will benefit KIVA.org, which supports individuals in impoverished countries. Don't miss this opportunity to help others, and have a chance to win a Vera Bradley purse. Wouldn't the purse make a great Mother's Day gift?!

Auditions for the Lassiter Color Guard will be held on May 1,2,3 from 6-9 P.M. in the small gym at Lassiter High School.

The Mabry Volunteer brunch will be held May 7 from 10-11:30 A.M. in the Media Center.

T-shirts for Mabry field days are now on sale for $7 each. Show your team spirit and order your shirt now.

Students are reminded to be sure they have a book to read after they complete CRCT testing each day next week. Students must remain silent until the end of each testing period, and those who finish before the end of the specified time will be participating in SSR (sustained silent reading).

Tickets for the 8th grade dance will be sold to 8th grade students before school on Tuesday, March 27, and Wednesday, March 28 in the 8th grade Science wing. This is the ONLY time tickets will be sold.

8th grade students may also order the limited edition 8th grade T-shirt when the 8th grade dance dance tickets are sold. T-shirts can be worn every friday in May. The prize patrol will be looking for 8th graders showing class spirit!

Tryout clinics for Lassiter High School cheerleading will be held Monday-Wednesday, March 26-28, from 4-6 P.M. in the LHS large gym. Middle School students are NOT to check out early. By the time the high school girls are registered, middle schooler will have had time to get to Lassiter from middle school. Tryputs will be held thursday, March 29, from 4-10 P.M.

Wednesday, March 7, is an early release day. Students will be dismissed at 2:15 P.M.

There will be an informational meeting at 7 P.M. in the Lassiter High School Cafeteria on Thursday, March 8, for any 8th grade girls interested in football, basketball, or competitive cheerleading in 9th grade. Interested girls should attend, accompanied by a parent.

Celebrate Dr. Seuss with Read Across America!

March 2 is Read Across America Day, held on the birthday of author, Dr. Seuss. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Read Across America and the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Cat in the Hat!

Mabry will celebrate by participating in a national read-aloud of the book at 2:36 P.M. on March 2. Why 2:36? The book has exactly 236 words! Students who own a copy of The Cat in the Hat should bring it to school, in case all reachers do not have a copy.

In addition, the Media Center will post a Seuss book trivia question each class period on March 2. Students should submit their answers to the circulation desk in the Media Center. Students may answer any or all of the 7 questions. Winners for each question will receive a Dr. Seuss book.

Students who are planning to apply to Pebblebrook must attend this meeting. Interested 8th graders should sign up in the Guidance Office by January 16 in order to attend the meeting.

Students interested in participating in the North Metro Regional Technology Fair on February 3, must have their applications in to Mrs. Hendrix in the Media Center by December 18. Students may enter any kind of technology-related project. Entries must be projects completed during this school year, by individual students, or by a team of 2 students. Projects could be PowerPoint or Keynote presentations, digital photography, digital movies, robotics, animation, podcasts, wirecasts, etc.

The National Jr. Honor Society is collecting new toys and games to be given to needy children who live in the Marietta area. The collection dates are December 4-12. Homeroom teachers have a suggested list of items.

Day 1 of the Twelve Days of Reading contest sponsored by the Media Center is complete. Whose homeroom will read the greatest number of pages by December 20? Remember, the winning homeroom in each grade level will receive a breakfast provided by the Media Center after the holidays.

There will be a mandatory meeting of the Mabry News Team tomorrow morning at 8:30 in the Media Center.

The deadline for registration for the North Metro Regional Technology Fair is December 15. See Mrs. Hendrix in the Media Center if you are interested in registering for the competition.

Word of the Week - Gratitude - A feeling of thankful appreciation for benefits received

ALL Media Center materials should have been returned on Friday. This includes both student and staff materials that have been checked out from the Media Center. The Media Center automation system will convert from Athena to Destiny on Wednesday.

Students interested in competing in the North Metro Regional Technology Fair in February must complete an application form by December 11. Application forms are available from Mrs. Hendrix in the Media Center.

Mabry Well-represented at the Georgia Educational Technology Conference

Several presentations at GaETC are being conducted by Mabry representatives. Dr. Tyson is featured as a "Spotlight Speaker." Mrs. Hendrix is presenting for one of the sessions. Two I-movie teams (Mrs. Ridlehoover and Ms. Larkin) are showing their works in the Exhibition Hall. Way to go, Mabry!

Lassiter High School will host a Parent Night for all rising 8th graders on Tuesday, November 14, at 7 P.M. Parents will receive information to begin the transition to high school, as well as information about the curriculum.

This year the Mabry Reflections program had 144 entries in the areas of Literature, Photography, and Visual Arts. Each student who submitted an entry was included in a drawing for the category in which he/she submitted an entry. The following students are participation drawing winners and receive a $25 Target gift certificate: Literature-Drew M.; Photography-Katie K.; Visual Arts-Olivia H.
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each category will be announced in early November.

There will be a Mabry News Team meeting on Wednesday, October 18, at 8:30 A.M. in the Media Center.

The Book Fair is here at Mabry this week. Students will be coming with their Language Arts classes to visit the Book Fair. In addition, the Book Fair is open each morning from 8:15-9:15 A.M. and until 4:30 P.M. Monday-Thursday. The Book Fair will close at 1 P.M. Friday afternoon.
