We had a busy day today. We checked homework, took the quiz on the 5 Themes of geography, and started a Venn diagram comparing the Physical Geographic features of Europe and Russia. The assignment is to read pages 11-15, and as you read fill in the Venn diagram comparing the physical geographic features of Europe and Russia. When the diagram is finished, use the information you wrote to write a brief summary on the physical geographic features of Europe and Russia. Write at least 5 sentences. We started this in class and you need to complete it for homework if you did not finish it in class.

Today we took a quiz using Latitude and Longitude. Students also received 2 vocabulary sheets to keep in their notebooks. Students will have a quiz on the geography terms on Thursday the 24th (students will only be quizzed on the words that have a check next to it). The following assignments were given to the students and explained. This project is due on Friday August 25th:
Geography Terms Project
Choose ONE of the following:
1. Make flash cards for each geography term. Each card must have the word, the definition, and a picture that is colored. All 44 words.
2. Write a story about a new country that you have created. Write a title for your paper. Use 30 geography terms and make sure you describe the terms vividly; I want to be able to picture the terms in my head as I read your story. As you write your story briefly talk about the government, the people, and the natural resources of the country and how your country makes money. Write at least 6 paragraphs with at least 5 sentences in each paragraph. Type the story in a 12 font, or write it neatly.
3. Draw and color a map of a new country you have created. Make-up a name for your country. Your MUST show 30 different physical features (mountain, lake, river, desert, volcano, etc.) Give each physical feature a name, and label it on your map. For example Mt. Miceli, Lake Teresa, the Tyson Desert. Use your geography terms sheet to help you. Include 10 man-made features (hospital, school, factory, roads, homes) and make a key to show what your drawings represent.

Our first day of school went very well. The students wrote an Acrostic Poem using their first and last name. If you did not finish your poem in class you need to finish it at home. We will continue sharing our poems with each other in class on Tuesday.
Share your poem with your parents tonight at dinner.

Welcome to Mabry! After 26 years of teaching, each new school year is exciting and different. Mabry is a wonderful school with great students and great parents. This is my 23rd year teaching at Mabry. I started as a special ed teacher, then an 8th grade reading teacher, then a 7th grade social studies teacher, and now a 6th grade social studies teacher. I have a Master’s Degree in Middle Grades Social Studies and Math, with a Gifted endorsement add-on. I am looking forward to meeting you.
Your first homework assignment is to talk to your parents, or grandparents, about your family heritage. Find out when your family first came to the United States, what country they came from, where they first settled when they came to the USA, and how did your family end up in Georgia. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WRITE ANYTHING! Just be ready to share what you have learned about your family. I am looking forward to hearing your stories, and I will share my family heritage too.
This year, in Social Studies, we will cover Europe and Russia, Latin America, Australia, and Canada and the United States. We have a lot to learn, but we will have some fun while we learn.
