Ms. So began a unit this week with the students based on the new campaign from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). It is called "Meet the Buds" and the purpose is to bring awareness to the health of your hearing. The "buds" are two cartoon characters who encourage students to be careful with listening devices and to follow the Rules of Thumb:

1. Lower the volume
2. Limit listening time
3. Upgrade your headphones


From the ASHA website:

In March, an ASHA poll looked at the usage habits of high school students with respect to some popular technology that provides audio through earbuds or earphones. More than half of high school students surveyed reported at least one symptom of hearing loss. While the poll did not attribute hearing loss to unsafe usage of personal stereo systems, it did report that these students are listening too long and at volumes too loud.

The students looked forward to reading the play, "Treasure Island," and we created story maps to help us understand the characters and what happened in the play. We finished last week, so ask your students to tell you about the story.

We are reading this story in play form from the Scope magazine. So far we have filled out KWL charts about what we Know, Want to Know, and Learned about Pirates. It's interesting what the students already know! The popularity of the pirate movie this summer and the fictional character Jack Sparrow have helped the students describe and talk about pirates. We have also created a vocabulary list and played vocabulary jeopardy.

We started reading the play this week and will continue into next week, if necessary. At home, you can ask your students about pirates and what they have learned.

I do my best to make speech times work for everyone. If there is a problem with the time or day that your student is seen for speech, please let me know and I will try to arrange another time.

Your student may have told you about the "alternating schedule." What does this mean? Students come to speech during the PE/Connections classes. So your child doesn't miss the same class every week, they alternate so that this week they come out of Connection Class 1 and next week during Connection Class 2. In a couple of weeks, we will put the schedule in your student's agenda for the next few weeks. For now, students receive a pass from me during homeroom class.

Welcome back to a new school year at Mabry! I'm looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new ones. I hope you have all had a good summer.

I am the Speech-Language Pathologist at Mabry. I have been here six years and my office is in the Media Center. The seventh and eighth grade students know me and know where to find me but I will be making my way through the sixth grade and to new students in the other grades during the first week to introduce myself. Students should get their speech schedules during the first week of school and the second week at the very latest.

Through this blog, I will be explaining more about Speech and the student's speech schedules. Stay tuned!
