CBI has finally begun! The Community Based Instruction program is an integral part of the special education program for certain students with disabilities. It is my goal to teach the students how to function as independently as possible in a variety of community settings. The CBI goals for students are: to provide the opportunity to increase independence in the community, to provide choices for appropriate leisure skills, to teach appropriate social behavior in situationally dependent settings and to reinforce academic skills in a functional environment. The students seem to enjoy the planning of our trips almost as much as the trips themselves. They enjoyed ordering from the menu at CrackerBarrel and looking for a class pet at Petland. Unfortunately, my students wanted a parrot for the classroom and I persuaded them against their first choice.I was afraid that the parrot might set a bad example by talking out in class.

Parents, please take the time to look over the wonderful work your child is bringing home from school. They are working very hard to please both you and me.We are working on many reading, language arts and math skills. As long as time permits, I write in their agendas. Sometimes I get so carried away with what your child is learning that I forget to watch the clock to leave myself a couple of minutes to put things down on paper. Your child'a agenda should give you an opportunity to ask,"So what did you do today." Our first CBI trip will be on Friday, September 9th. My students and I will be choosing where we should be going tomorrow. Until we meet again.
