Below is the song we started singing today. The last verse is particularly helpful in helping to remember where the protons, neutrons and electrons are located in the atom. I suggest you memorize this song...it could show up again.

Parents,
Just a reminder. If your child has a missing grade, it could mean that I have put in the category and have not input the grades into I-Parent. Please, should you see a missing grade, either email me or give it a few days and check again. There are times when we need to get in a few grades and have not completed the whole class.
Thanks,
Carol Sumrell

Dear Parents,
Please feel free to email anytime. I do ask that you put in the subject area you child's name. If it is an email I am not familiar with and I don't recognize the subject then I will not open it.
Thank you for all your support and understanding. I know this will be a good year.

Hi All,
I really enjoyed meeting so many of the parents at Open House. Thank you for coming. Just a few reminders, if your child has Mrs. Johnson for science, please visit this blog for what is taking place.
The students in my class did not do as well as I had hoped on their SI Units test so today I gave them a "bandaid" to help. I verbally called out 10 questions based on the same material as the test. That grade will be averaged in with the original. So far, there has been much improvement of the grades. Because of Open House last night, these grades will not be completed and posted until Friday. Hopefully sooner.
The students took an Atom pretest today to give us some guidance as to where they are in what they know about atoms. This will determine how much time we will need to speed on this subject. The periodic table is next. Since class schedules will be different during test on September 6th and 7th, we will be having the students working on a periodic table project. If all goes as planned, this project will produce a huge periodic table for the classroom as well as teaching the kids about elements and what they are useful for. Each child will select an element, lottery style and do some research on it and type up the information (1/2 page max) so it can be displayed along with the element chart they will make in class. The directions for that will be on the blog soon.
As always, please email with any concerns, questions or items you think I might need to be aware of. I will do the same.
Have a great evening.
Ms. S.

These next few weeks are going to be full and fast. We will be reviewing for the SI Unit test on Tuesday. It was postponed from last Friday to Tuesday due to the material not being covered completely. So, Monday, review, Tuesday morning, 8:15, study session and the test that day.
We will then begin matter and finished up the second week of September with the periodic table. After that, into the book and we will "dig" into geology.
We have had a couple of simple labs this week. They have been on material that is review. Parents, please remind your students that a lab is equivalent to a quiz grade. Some students just don't seem to grasp that concept.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please email me.
Don't forget, Tuesday is Open House for parents. Please leave your student(s) at home. This is your time to see how your child's day begins and ends.
Thank you for your support.

Today, most classes finished up a mini lab on measuring length using the metric system. Tomorrow we will do another lab on measuring mass and volume. We are going to begin matter next week and the following week the periodic table.
Hope these updates help.

Well, it has been a very busy week. We were going to have a test on the SI units this Friday but there is just too much to cover. So, that test has been postponed until Tuesday, August, 29th. We will have a study session on Monday morning at 8:15 and students can always email me. The biggest challenge has been converting Celsius to Fahrenheit and Fahrenheit to Celsius. I think we may have mastered that one. The students were able to solve 3 conversion problems for a 3 point bonus on their test. If they got them wrong, they didn't lose points, they could only gain them.
Today, we started a measurement lab. The students were to measure 15 different items and then convert each measurement to all the metric units. We will finish up tomorrow. The rest of the week, we will be working on what metric units are used for volume and mass.
Next week, we will begin the periodic table and how to read it and its relationship to Earth Science.
Parents, I just want you to know that I am truly enjoying your children and I hope this year continues to be as pleasant and productive and this last week has been.
Hope to see you at Open House on the 29th.
