Don't forget to color your illustration, make it neat and clean and write neatly on the back when writing how the spheres personally affect you.

We are beginning the process of studying the systems of Earth. Today's essential question is: How do Earth's systems compare to the human body systems?
The books are still not being issued and hopefully, the county will give us what is needed to get the books on line soon. Until then, I will make sure to have students take notes or make copies of what is needed for them to be successful.
For those students that didn't remember today, your Matter test is due tomorrow signed by a parent and the study guide needs to be signed also. If you do not have it tomorrow, I will be making phone calls/emails to parents making sure they are aware of your grades.
Tonight's homework is to complete the illustration of the following spheres. Biosphere, Atmosphere, Geosphere (solid Earth), Atmosphere. Then, on the back of the paper you were given to draw these illustrations, you are to write at least 5 things that affect you personally for which each sphere is responsible. An example would be if you were a hot air balloonist, you would be affected by the atmosphere. If what you write can be place in two or more spheres, star that item. It can only be used in one sphere though.
See you tomorrow!

The scan tron of your matter test and your study guide are to be signed by a parent and both returned to me on Monday. Don't forget to get this done.
Next week, we will begin the Earth's systems. We will study the big picture and then narrow it down to individual systems in detail.
See you Monday,
Mrs. S.

If you did not finish the Essential Question today, please do so tonight and have it ready to turn in tomorrow in class. Below is the 6th EQ.
Compound fractures, compound miter saws, compound formulas and compound problems...what makes them a compound? How does this relate to the elements of the periodic table?
We had the matter test today. I hope to have it back to you tomorrow.

Just a quick reminder that the matter test is tomorrow. Each student has had a packet for the last few weeks in place of the textbook since this material is not in the text. They have also made vocabulary books from colored paper to help them study. Please, make sure your child brings this booklet to class on Thursday to be passed in.
An informal study session was held yesterday, today and a formal one on Thursday. They begin at 8:15. These have been announced in class. We will be reviewing today in class as well.
If your child returned their progress report signed the next day, they received 3 bonus points for their test. This is their bonus for the test. They also received an additional point if they had completed at least 10 questions from their study guide that was to be homework.
Also, a reminder that when you check I-Parent, if you see an "M", it is just a place being held for the test on Thursday and this will lower you child's grade. It will make a big difference once the grades are put into the system.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to email me.
Ms. S.

Just a few drawings to help you better understand that covalent bonds form chemically to make a compound. Covalent bonds usually happen between nonmetal and nonmetal.
Have a great weekend. Please, begin to study for the test next Thursday. Study guides will go home on Monday after we have started working on them. You will finish it for homework, we will review them on Tuesday, we will review for the test on Wednesday and on Thursday we will test. Don't forget your vocabulary booklets on Thursday. I will be taking them up then.

With testing going on, we are only seeing certain classes each day. The homework for tonight for 3rd, 6th and 7th periods is due Wednesday. They are to have sections 5.4 and 5.5 completed on the paper provided. Remember 5.4 is white and 5.5 is red. Periods 1st and 2nd the homework is due Thursday.
Also, all elements were due Monday and any not turned in are 10 points off each day they are late. After 3 days, it will go down as a zero.
Continue checking the blog. The matter test is September 21.
Below are the vocabulary words you need to make sure you have in your vocabulary booklets for 5.4 and 5.5.
We discussed covalent bonds and valence electrons today. Please make sure you understand this or make an appointment to see me.
You will also need to know the following compounds and elements for the test.
Fe
H20
H2O2
NaCl
H2S04
HCl
Ni
Au
Ag
N
C
O
K
Si
S
Al

You must come to class on Thursday prepared to work on your element project. You will need to research your element and bring the materials about it to class tomorrow. Without it, you will be behind and unprepared to turn it in on Friday at the beginning of class.
This is just a quick sample I made and yours should be a lot better and more detailed. Remember, this is a test grade and you really need to pay attention to what your element is used for to help you with this. You have been given the sites to visit for the information needed on the fact sheet and they are also on the blog. Please, make sure you have this completed and ready to turn in on Friday or it is a zero.
Have fun with this, make it something you are proud of and want displayed in class.

Remember for Mrs. Sumrell's and Mrs. Johnson's classes...your homework is to do your vocabulary 2 column notes on the paper we gave you for sections 5.2 and 5.3 of your matter packet. Remember, bold words and all the questions after each section.
Mrs. Sumrell's class, you have orange paper for 5.2 and green paper for 5.3 with the exception of periods 1 and 2. Periods 1 and 2, just use notebook paper.
Thank you,
Mrs. S.

Below are requirement sheet, fact sheet and rubric for grading of the periodic table project that will be taking place the rest of the week. Make sure you check out the websites I have already provided in class and on the blog to get information on your element.

I forgot to give all the homework to my 1st and 2nd periods so please, add section 5.3 to your homework. If you have green paper use that. If not, just use your notebook paper. Make sure you do all the questions from 5.2 and 5.3

The following are excellent sites for our periodic table project we will be doing Wednesday and Thursday. Be ready to present on Friday.
www.chem4kids.com
www.webelements.com
www.chemicool.com
www.chemicalelements.com
www.lenntech.com/periodic-chart.htm
Please, feel free to copy off information and bring it in.
You will need information like boiling point, freezing point, what the element is used for, the symbol and names as well as the atomic number and atomic mass number.
See you tomorrow.

I have the final grades in the I-Parent on the test that was mentioned during open house. The students were given a chance to take a verbal test on the same material and those two grades were averaged together. Then, they were given a change to make 10 extra points with no penalties should they miss any question. I feel this has been more than fair and for some students, made a tremendous difference in their grade. I did also mention to the students that this was the one and only time a test would be given so often to provide additional opportunities to increase a grade.
I feel the students have a better knowledge as to what is expected in class and what they will need to study.
We are now in the beginnings of making a vocabulary booklet. The packets were sent home Friday. I know some of my students have more difficulties in keeping up with materials/writing/ so should this be an issue, always remember, the packet exists for this reason and your child can write, highland and make notes in the margins if that helps them.
Have a great weekend.
Mrs. S.
