A very large portion of a students grade is based solely upon whether or not they dress-out for class. It is the third week of class and the number of students that have failed to dress is going up daily. The grade component based on dressing out is the sole responsibility of the participant. Every student begins the 9 weeks with a 100% in dress. Every time they fail to dress they lose 5 points of this total. 20% is very nearly one quarter of a student's final grade and it is a shame to lose these valuable points for something as easy as changing clothes for class. Please encourage your Fitness student to dress-out for class.

After many days of going to various connections classes, the 6th graders came home to roost in their 9 week classes. On Friday last week we discussed the class and completed book contracts. These contracts simply state which book number your student has been assigned and the condition it was issued in. It is very important that students have a Health journal as soon as possible. We will write in these almost daily. 5th period may have a folder with 3-ring brads in it or a 1-subject spiral notebook. 6th period has decided they want the 1-subject spiral notebook. Journals are, in most cases, for the personal thoughts of the student as related to the material. This is a graded component of the class.

We have begun our unit on Ultimate Frisbee. The first few days were spent on lead-up skills games such as "Mark and Bark" and "Ultimate 4-Square". Mark and Bark is designed to utilize the short throws and quick releases needed for Ultimate. Ultimate 4-Square is important to develop the accuracy and distance throwing. We finished up the week with "mini games" and full court games.

We have completed all of our baseline fitness assessments and begun training on the circuit. Students utilize 17 resistance training machines with cardio stations between each station. The total circuit is 36 stations and takes 36 minutes to complete. The students are adapting quickly as most have had 7th grade fitness.

Today brings to a close the first week of school at Mabry Middle School. We have completed a large portion of our Baseline Fitness Assessment in the Fitness Lab and will begin circuit training early next week. Baseline Fitness Assessment consists of starting measurements for various components of fitness (see link list below). The students will also receive instruction on fitness concepts such as Muscular Anatomy, Muscular Physiology, Cardiorespiratory Fitness, and more. It is my hope that every student will show improvement in nearly every category upon End of Course Fitness Assessment. Please check this blog weekly for 8th Grade Fitness updates.

Today brings to a close the first week of school at Mabry Middle School. The students have already memorized our warm-up and stretch routine and are ready to begin our first unit on Ultimate Frisbee this Monday, August 21. It is very important that every student dresses-out for class. This, coupled with participation, is an important portion of their grade. Please check my blog weekly to stay on top of current developments in 7th Grade PE.
