Your students will participate in the smoking demonstration today. There is a possibility they may smell a little like smoke. Be advised this demo was done outside and out of reach of the students but within sight. They were shown the staining effects of cigarette smoke and allow to smell the cotton balls (if they wanted) to simulate the smell of smoke in the clothes, home, and/or car. Every precaution was taken to ensure the safety of your student during this demonstration.

We began our Soccer unit this week but due to the rain we were unable to play every day. Students got to play practice games and see each other's skill before they will pick tournament teams next week. We learned some basic rules such as starting play, throw-ins, and procedures after a goal is scored. We will play a regular season and playoffs to get a class champion.

We have completed all of our baseline fitness assessments and begun training on the circuit. Students utilize 17 resistance training machines with cardio stations between each station. The total circuit is 36 stations and takes 36 minutes to complete. The students are adapting quickly as most have had 7th grade fitness.

Students discussed the class and completed book contracts. These contracts simply state which book number your student has been assigned and the condition it was issued in. It is very important that students have a Health journal as soon as possible. We will write in these almost daily. The journal may be a folder with 3-ring brads in it or a 1-subject spiral notebook. Journals are, in most cases, for the personal thoughts of the student as related to the material. However, periodically students will be given an assignment to do instead. This is a graded component of the class. We will be finishing up Chapter 2 next Monday and the test will be early next week. Print the Study Guide and bring it in for extra credit.

Students have already received their books and we have begun learning about taking care of ourselves. The written test will be sometime next week and I will post a study guide today. It is important that every student have a journal/notebook that they can work in for journal grades.
Please check this blog frequently to stay on top of your student's Health work.

We have completed a large portion of our Baseline Fitness Assessment in the Fitness Lab and will begin circuit training early next week. Baseline Fitness Assessment consists of starting measurements for various components of fitness (see link list below). The students will also receive instruction on fitness concepts such as Muscular Anatomy, Muscular Physiology, Cardiorespiratory Fitness, and more. It is my hope that every student will show improvement in nearly every category upon End of Course Fitness Assessment. Please check this blog weekly for 8th Grade Fitness updates.

The students have already memorized our warm-up and stretch routine and are ready to begin our first unit on Soccer this Monday, October 16. It is very important that every student dresses-out for class. This, coupled with participation, is an important portion of their grade. Please check my blog weekly to stay on top of current developments in 7th Grade PE.

This week we worked on completing end of course fitness testing. Many students have should great improvement on several or all of the weight machines. Resting heart rate has decreased in many and stamina/strength has increased. We took advantage of the nice weather and went to the baseball diamond for some outdoor activity (whiffleball) as well this week. Tuesday, October 10th marks the end of this grading period.

Due to several factors including the first 9 weeks being cut 3 days short and end of course fitness testing, the final classroom day will not occur. This cardiorespiratory lab was an extra component to the requirements of the 8th grade Fitness class. For any students that were whole-heartedly looking forward to it- I apologize (the few of you there may actually be).

The students received projects forms on exactly what was expected of this project. I will try to post a copy here soon. Essentially, they must create an original over the counter (OTC) medicine. It can be for anything they want (within reason). No steroids or anything that would have a negative effect on someone (you'd be surprised at the ideas I have been asked about). These are do Monday and will be graded on the criteria included on the project sheet. Feel free to assist them and have fun.
