6th- Smoking demonstration

Your students will participate in the smoking demonstration today. There is a possibility they may smell a little like smoke. Be advised this demo was done outside and out of reach of the students but within sight. They were shown the staining effects of cigarette smoke and allowed to smell the cotton balls (if they wanted) to show the smell of smoke in the clothes, home, and/or car. Every precaution was taken to ensure the safety of your student during this demonstration.

This week students completed Chapter 2 (Taking Care of Yourself) and took a quiz. They began group projects about being a wise consumer. Groups are to use "quackery" ( making false claims ) to sell their product. Projects will be presented on Monday. Many groups have gone above and beyond utilizing PowerPoint, DVD, VHS, and Promethean boards for assistance in marketing their product. Next Tuesday will be the Chapter 2 Test. The study guide is posted as "CORRECT STUDY GUIDE" and students should each have their own self-created study guide. Students printing the study guide and filling it out will receive extra credit on the test.

This week we have been working out of our Human Growth & Development workbooks. This Cobb County approved curriculum concentrates heavily on making wise decisions, choosing friends, and being self-aware. Many of you are aware of the specifics with the take-home parent interviews that they have done over the past few days with you. Be aware that absolute deadline for any late work to be accepted is Monday, March 12. Next week there will be no blog. However, we will be finishing up in the H G & D workbooks. Thursday is the last day of the 9 weeks and Friday your students will be in a new connection and no longer in Health. It was great teaching them!

No steroids or anything that would have a negative effect on someone (you'd be surprised at the ideas I have been asked about). These are do Monday and will be graded on the criteria included on the project sheet. Feel free to assist them and have fun.

We did a short "unpop-quiz" today to give students an idea of what they need to look over during the weekend. They completed nutrition journals this past weekend, cataloging everything they ate and drank, and did well with that assignment. Students are understanding what makes a healthy choice and what comprises the 5 basic food groups.

Students discussed the class and completed book contracts. These contracts simply state which book number your student has been assigned and the condition it was issued in. It is very important that students have a Health journal as soon as possible. We will write in these almost daily. The journal may be a folder with 3-ring brads in it or a 1-subject spiral notebook. Journals are, in most cases, for the personal thoughts of the student as related to the material. However, periodically students will be given an assignment to do instead. This is a graded component of the class. We will be finishing up Chapter 2 next Monday and the test will be early next week. Print the Study Guide and bring it in for extra credit.
