10-31-06 volcanoes

The volcanoes earthquake homework is to reward the students that took notes, and behaved respectful to the presenter during their presentations. The students that paid attention to my request for note taking, and listening will have their halloween homework almost done. I then suggested that they students approach the presentations of other students and mine with respect and take notes at all time during my class. They are going to have to produce two sided note work about another groups different region. They will be required to do this for the rest of my class, for all movies, presentations, lectures, and lab or activity work. Respectful behavior is not just expected at our school, it is required in my class.

10-31-06 Volcanoes

Today we finished all but two presentations. We then reviewed the workbook chapter 6.1, and in some classes were able to start the process of drawing, cutting out, and labeling the key features of a volcano.

10-30-06 Volcanoes

Today we finished off some fantastic volcano projects, we had power point presentations, dry ice volcano demonstrations, great images and posters. We then worked out of the text book on page 185 which has a picture and definitions of key volcano terminology and made two column notes, then flash cards. I have more pictures of the students that I will try to show to them, and maybe put on my blog time permitting.

10-27-06 volcanoes presentations

Attention all parents and students, the grade book automatically resets my electronic weighting of assignments by category to 0. For example one homework assignment would be worth as much as a test grade etc. I have reset my weighting as detailed in my syllabus, and you will see that the overall grade in i-parent will be different than what you saw before. The individual grades by assignment will not change, but the overall average will because I weight an individual test or quiz score, or even project score heavier than an individual homework grade. We had some great presentations, and I took pictures of all of them. I will start to make a podcast for you to view on line in the near future. No students that are not allowed to be on a blog will be shown, so do not worry. No homework over the weekend.

10-25-06 work on presentations of volcanoes

Today we took care of some in class business and spent the rest of the time in the "mac lab" we will be doing that for the next two days for a portion of the period and there will be no to minimal home work because I want them to coordinate with each other, and work with each other as a lesson to how the real work world is, and to also learn from each other. I have created a few additional aides for them to help them in their computer work, if they so choose. Computer stuff is not required, and they know, Content is what is going to be graded.

10-23-06 volcanoes

Today we finished reading chapter 6.1, pages 178-181, and did a latitude longitude mapping activity to plot the location of volcanoes, and earthquakes. We plotted them on a map that showed the plate boundaries faults, and volcanoes in the oceans of the world, the ring of fire, the continents shaded in dark. Some students needed to bring the work home to finish. Much homework, quizzes, and tests were handed back. Some I still need to enter. I am un-burying myself from the end of grades and conference week.

10-20-06 Volcanoes

I have made small groups of students by area of interest to investigate the affects of volcanism on the environment, commerce, and communities in the recent past, and in the distant past. I want them to concentrate on information gathering for a good and great presentation versus just a few pictures from google images and not an in depth understanding of how to research a scientific issue, and all the ramifications that a scientific event like a volcanic eruption entails. This is the home work, and will be most of the homework for the next week. I will assign additional homework on top of this but the students will always have this to work on. The earliest date that I expect reports from the groups is next Friday. I have told my students that I value information above a few google image pictures. I want them to show me that they know how to mine for information. I will give them time during class to research the internet as a group on my classroom desktop, and also try to get the class as a whole multiple computer access next week.

To my second period parents that I met, I enjoyed meeting all of you and hope we have the chance to do that again.

My home High speed coaxial cable connection is now up and running and I can now finnish my entering of the grades.

Take care, and enjoy the great new weather.

10-19-06 Volcano activity

The homework is to read chapter pages 176 and 177, and to think about what volcanic area to research and do a small project on. I will be putting the rubric for the project on the blog and handing it out to the students next week.

10-19-06 the last Earthquake day

Because we spent the majority of yesterday testing, we spent most of today doing DEAR. We finished the day reviewing the extra credit part of the test, the epicenter activity. Tomorrow we start studying volcanoes. Check the homework category.

10-17-06 Earthquakes

Today we had fun, we did an epicenter lesson first. I showed how the length of the difference between the P and S waves are directly proportional or related to how far a sensor for an earthquake is from the epicenter. We graphed and did three triangulating circles to determine the epicenter. This is quite simplified, but that is the way to teach a new concept. We then reviewed more of chapter 5 by an open question and answer, and finally we did a who wants to be a millionare activity. Take care and prepare for the test.

10-17-06 Final review for Earthquakes test

Sorry the blog is late, I had some late conferences. We had a fun day. We started by doing an earthquake epicenter and distance from sensor lesson. It involved the Promethean board and graphing, epicenter radius circles, and the relationships between them. The difference between when the P wave and then the S wave arrive is directly related to how far the sensor is away from the epicenter of the quake. Time equals distance, a long time equals a long distance and a short time equals a short distance. We then had a question and answer session, followed by a science who wants to be a millionare activity. Tomorrow is a test. Take care and study, please.

10-11-06 Earthquakes

During class today I review the grades with the students because I made a small change in one of the total number of points for a 100 percent because some students put in minimal to extraordinary effort. I explained this to all the kids. We then reviewed the workbook pages, and started two worksheet handouts that are due tomorrow as homework. For second period I reviewed the days and times for conferences and had the students record them to bring to you. Tomorrow I will be giving them one last handout if I do not have a confirmed time. I have moved many times for parents already.

10-5-06 Earthquakes

Today we reviewed the previous days workbook exercise. The next thing that we did was two double sided worksheets that reviewed and reinforced all the new fault, and earthquake information of this week. No home work over the week end. Thanks again for working so hard on the 3D project, I really appreciate it, you all made me proud.

10-04-06 Earthquakes

No homework for tonight. I am giving you all a break because you worked so hard over the weekend. Today was our DEAR day and students read for 30 minutes. I gave each student their grades for the 3D project. I will be entering them in to to electronic grade book tonight along with other assignments that I am trying to catch up on. After reading I assigned each student to a new position and seat in class because I completely rearranged the desks in the class room in order to minimize talking, distractions from friends, vision issues, and proximity to the front of the class. I also have their text books set up and have changed their shared assigned in class text book so their is no wasted time or confusion in terms of getting their specific text book. Next I went over the username and password that they will be using to use the online textbook. Their username is CCSD__lunch#, and their password is success. We then watched my finished imovie that showed all the students presenting their 3D models. I hope to have this on my blog soon. We finished up with a question and answer exercise with "stars" as incentives. Eight stars allows the student to choose from 30 envelopes that have small treats in them.

10-2-06 3d fault presentations

My students presented their 3D strike slip or fault projects, and all were fantastic. I graded them on accuracy and effort, and also took pictures of them and their work. I also returned several graded assignments and showed them a list of all the assignments that I expected to be turned into me at this time.
