The Mabry Middle School library is located along the 7th grade hallway. The Mabry Media Center has countless research sources from books to computers. Mrs. Hendricks, a former teacher, is involved with activities from scavenger hunts to lessons to perfect skills involving index, table of contents, and glossary. Also, she teaches research skills... from works cited to how to navigate online. In addition, the media center has a selection of award winning books that we use each year for the 25 books that are required for us to read. No need to worry, though, middle school is a breeze if you work hard and keep up with your work. You'll do fine! Remember, our library is full of good books and good people!!!

Don't let your brain become a midget. Let it grow by reading some books!

In the media center, students will find books as well as computers. Computers can either be used for typing papers or research.

The types of books available for us to read are fiction, nonfiction, science fiction, and autobiographies. There are also atlases, thesauruses, and other research materials.

The Media Center staff includes Mrs.Hendrix and Mrs. Hiss.

Your Language Arts class will go to the library every other week to do a small project. These projects are at times related to holidays. Most of the times they are teaching an important library or research skill. Mrs. Hendrix makes sure all her students are up to date with the latest news and technology having to do with media.

   Directions to the library:
1- Go through the front doors (near the front office).
2- Go straight to the skylight.
3- Enter the eighth grade hall and the library will be right there on your left.

The Mabry Media Center is a place to learn or to get away with a great read!

Make-up Work: If you are absent from school, you may call a friend to get missed assignments, or get them from your teachers when you are able to return to school. Every student is responsible for being sure that all their individual work is made up. If a student misses a test because of an unexpected absence , they will be responsible to make up the test on the day he/she returns to class. Missed class work may be picked up for students who will be out three or more days. Upon return from an absence, the student will be give one day for each day he/she was absent to complete make-up work. The assignments should be completed within the number of days equal to the number of days the student was absent. Missed class work for extensive five or more days will be taken up with the counselors and teachers.

Drugs: Of course, no drugs will be tolerated. Even if you are joking around saying that something is a drug, it can result in a minimum of ten days OSS.

Locker checks: If the administrators feel the need to check your lockers, they may do so without your permission. You do not own your lockers, the school does.

Dress Code: The administrators reserve the right to make individual judgements on the appropriateness of a student's attire. The extent of the punishment for breaking the dress code also is determined by the administration. check the mabry dress code!

Conferences: At the end of the first nine weeks, parents will be scheduled to appear at a 20 minute parent-teacher conference informing the parents on their childs academic progress and behavior.

Transitional learning Center: The TLC helps students to catch up on work missed while serving OSS.
Students may attend the TLC on the 6th day of suspension for a maximum of 20 days at one time.

Mrs. Jackie Rand is one of our outstanding special education teachers. She graduated from Jersey City State University with a BA in Special Education and from Georgia State with an MA in School Counseling. This is the beginning of her 15th year teaching Special Education. Mrs. Rand taught 2 years in New Jersey and 12 years in Cobb County and is beginning her 3rd year at Mabry. She says that, "I know my best years of teaching are still ahead of me."

Mrs. Krodman

Mrs. Krodman interview.
Q: What are the qualifications for special services for students?
A: There is a procedure to be followed for students to receive special education services. This process is usually begun in elementary school, but sometimes students come to middle school and start having difficulty with the demands of so many different subjects. In this case, their teachers start to develop strategies to assist them so that they can achieve. For many students this is enough help to be successful. Other students need to be taught differently even though they are just as smart as their classmates. Sometimes this is organizational or study skills help; sometimes it is help with reading or writing composition skills, and sometimes it is help with math. Students who need special education services are students with average or above average intelligence that need multi-sensory instruction.
Q: What are the subjects taught?
A: In middle school, special education services are offered for every academic subject and occasionally foreign language and connection classes.
Q: What do you do?
A: This year, I teach sixth grade math, science, social studies and language arts, and in seventh grade math and language arts. Also, I prepare individualized education plans for students, perform duties assigned to me by the administrators, and teach a STARS class.
Q What are the requirements for your job?
A: Any teacher must complete a bachelor’s degree and pass certain tests. Additionally, I hold a teaching certificate with concentrations in every academic area I teach.

Seven of Mrs. Krodman's twenty years of teaching experience have been at Mabry Middle School. The remaining thirteen years were in three public school districts in three different states and one private school. Her experience covers first, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Though she began her teaching career in regular education, her true passion in education is working with students who have special learning needs. Mrs. Donna Krodman is one of the outstanding special education teachers at Mabry. She says that this is the place where she feels her teaching really matters.

a) At the end of each chapter, so about every two to three weeks. Map tests are given two to three per unit.
b) Start reviewing their quizzes and assignments; about four to five days before, spend about ten-fifteen minutes reviewing.
c) Students need to see me when they get back and we will set up a time before or after school.
d) Usually only once, at the beginning of the year when they take their first map test. Map tests are usually the hardest, and they don't realize how much they need to study.

We would like to thank the other 6th grade teachers who kindly answered our interview questions. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and space. Thank you Mrs. Lippincott, Mrs. Cushman, Mrs. Brown-Curry!!!!
HOMEWORK IS ONE OF THE MANY KEYS TO "SIXCEEDING!"

Homework is one of the most important parts of school and can be rewarding if you do it well.

Agendas
Agendas help you keep organized. You write down all your homework assignments and when you have tests or quizzes in your classes. Your agenda should be kept neat so that you can read it.

Example of Neat Agenda

Example of Messy Agenda

Questions to Teachers
1. What is your consequence for students not having their homework?
2. What percent of a grade is homework?
3. How many hours/minutes of homework do you give during a weekly basis?
4. How does doing your homework help students?

Mrs. Cushman- Language Arts
1. Students have one night to make up the work with a grade of a fifty. If not completed that one night, grade becomes a zero.
2. Homework is 10%.
3. At least two hours weekly
4. Students review, practice, and learn material. Students become more responsible for their learning.

Ms. Mitchell- Math
1. Math homework is based on completion, not accuracy. If a student does not do their homework, or does not complete the homework according to directions, then the student receives a zero.
2. Homework is 10% of the math grade.
3. Math has homework every day, except for Friday's, because we are usually doing Accelerated Math and DEAR. We don't usually have homework on test days.
4. Students need to practice math on a daily basis. Homework is a chance for students to independently practice the skills and concepts that they have learned in class that day. It is used as reinforcement.

Ms. Brown-Curry- Science .
1. The consequence for failure to do homework usually ends in a zero if the student fails to show for study hall the next day.
2. It is 10%; it's a small chunk, but every little piece counts.
3. On average Ms. Brown-Curry assigns between two to three assignments per week. Some of the assignments are spread over a couple of days. This provides students with the flexibility of beginning sooner or later.
4. Homework is used for two purposes: introduction or practice. If done properly, it helps the students learn concepts and to be prepared for class discussion

---Interview with Mrs.Waters (the nurse)---

Student- "If a student has a temperature, what procedure is followed?"
Nurse- " Well, if the temperature is greater then 100.6 degrees fahrenheit, then the student must go home."

Student- "Under what conditions would you send a child home?
Nurse- " I would recommend a child to go home if he or she has a fever, is vomiting, has diarrhea, develops a rash, breaks a bone, or has a severe headache."

Student- "At what time during the day are you available?"
Nurse- "I am available from 9:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M."

Student- "What type of medications are you allowed to hold for children?"
Nurse- "I can dispense all medications, but the parent must sign a specific form to dispense a prescribed medication. In middle school a student can carry an OTC medication with an OTC form. OTC stands for over- the- counter medication."

Student-"Where do students go if you are not available?"
Nurse- "A student will go to the office if I am not available."

Student- "What is the procedure if you are bringing prescription medicine from home?"
Nurse- "Parents must drop them off at the school and fill out forms."
