Welcome to Team Earth Mermaids!

We are the Earth Mermaids, and we are doing three different projects, but they all have something to do with soil. Person 1 is doing a project involving how the type of soil affects the amount of erosion. Person 2 is doing a project involving stream flow. Person 3 is doing a project involving worms.
We have gone out to the park three times, and Person 1 has collected soil samples for thier experiment. Person 2 has taken measurements of the creek and looked at other aspects of how it flows. Person 3 has received their worms and has established the worms' habitat in a tank inside the classroom.
We will try to post regularly and hopefully include more information next time.
We wish you Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Introduction to Team Hyphonia

Team Hyphonia is one of the many teams conducting experiments in Sweat Mountain Park. Our main focuses are trees and edible plants. Tonks is well on her way on her experiment on classifying edible plants in the park. Maximus is still in the process of collecting mushrooms for his experiment, also on classification. The main focus of the group is on Maximus's and Tonks's experiments, and will be beginning other experiments after Christmas Break. Other experiments are about trees, and focus on factors like the type of trees at different distances from the creek. We would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and we will be providing more information on the experiments as it comes.

Progress in the Wannabe Group

Since we have such a diverse project group, in our postings we will try to write a recap of all our members' progress. The lichen study is coming along nicely, and we already have two sets of data collection. We're putting the finishing touches on our project organization, then all we will have to do is collect data! What we are focusing on is to find in which cardinal direction lichens grow best on a tree. The leaf person has finally figured out what to base her project on. She is working with pigments on artificially lit leaves versus the ones covered in tin foil. The last member, who's working with trees, is in the proccess of mapping out a nature trail in the park. She is absent today, so we don't quite know how far along she is.

Bye for now! Have a merry holiday this break!!!!

Park Days #1-3

This week and last week we went to the park three times to put up the coverboards. Our first time was on Tuesday, December 12. That day we put up the first set of coverboards. It was set 2A and 2B.

This was our spot that we put the coverboard in.
The second time was on Monday, December 18. We set up the coverboards 1A and 1B. One of our team mates was absent today so she didnot do anything. We do not have a picture of this site at the present time.
Today was our third time going to the park, it was also the last day that we went out before winter break. Today is Thursday, December 21. Today I was the only member of the team that was present, so some members of other teams were able to help me locate the spot that we chose for the third coverboard. We didnot have a Sharpie so we could not label the tubes, so we just layed out the boards.
Here are some pictures of us fooling around and working.

Project Work in the Park

Mabry Students are collecting data about the Sweat Mountain Park environment and will use this site to share their findings and reflections on their work.

One group of students who will report are members of The Science Club. They are measuring and reporting the (Adopt-A-Stream) water quality monitoring data as an ongoing project. They also are planning and preparing to build a seating area in one part of the park for classes to use later this year.

Other students who will report are organized into project teams in their science classes and will be sharing their independent study projects related to the park environment.
